Breeding and Training

 We take pride in having well behaved horses trained to ride and drive. During the winter we hitch our horses to ornate hand carved sleighs, then carts and wagons when the snow leaves.

On our farm we breed and train horses that are a pleasure to be a round. Our goal is to raise and train well mannered, gentle, athletic fjord horses of the highest quality. The horses are handled several times each day as we have integrated the horses with our rural artisan lifestyle. For us the fjord horse is living folk art.

We believe in preserving the four or five color variations of the fjord but not at the cost of disposition and conformation. Most of our fjords are brown duns. In 2001 we imported a white dun mare from Norway. Now, in 2002, we are importing a very high quality gray dun fjord stallion. Our mare Raude is a red dun. There are only a very few yellow dun fjords in existence and we do not expect to have one any time soon.

In this quest, Phillip has attended several conformation evaluation clinics offered by the Norwegian Fjord Horse Association. He has also traveled to Norway to study the fjord as the Norwegians understand them. In addition, he reads everything he can find that is printed about the fjord horse. Nearly all this material is printed in the Norwegian language.

Phillip and Else often speak with Norwegian breeders about individual horses and concepts in breeding and training fjord horses. At home Phillip attends a regular driving class and is mentored by some of the best horseman andwomen in the country.

Fjords are bred to be a versatile working animal. We train them to trail ride, pull light carts in light harness and heavier wagons and sleighs in work harness. We also use them under the pack saddle. Fjords have done well in ridden dressage.
