Memorial Day Evaluation Clinic and Fjord Fun Days 2008

May 24,25,26

Odden’s Norwegian Fjord Horses

Else Bigton and Phillip Odden

Memorial Day weekend can be one of the nicest weekends during the summer season in northwestern Wisconsin to spend time with their horses. This year I would like to invite fjord horse owners and fjord enthusiasts to come to our farm located near Cumberland Wisconsin to enjoy a weekend of fjord fun and a Fjord Evaluation Clinic.

We have space to drive carts and carriages on our farm and off our farm, use the indoor arena, and trail ride the extensive trails on county forest property just down the road. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the Burnett County property where there are over 20 miles of trails. So this is a great place to ride horses on the scenic Ice Age trail. Motor vehicles are not allowed on this Burnett County Property making it an ideal place to ride horses.

Evaluation Clinic Saturday, indoor arena

On Saturday Phil will talk about and demonstrate strategies and skills you will need to show your fjords at an NFHR evaluation for conformation and performance tests. We will look over the tests and the judge’s forms and he will answer any questions that come forth regarding the evaluations. There will be some demonstrations of performance tests in driving, draft, and riding. This is an opportunity to learn more about your horse and the evaluation process. We will talk about form and function. Auditors welcome.

On Sunday and Monday there will be an opportunity to look over the Dressage arena and drive the marathon course including hazards and water crossings for the Timberland Driving Trial Clinic to be held July 5-6, 2008.

People can camp on the grass near the arena and bring portable stalls or fencing. Bring your own bedding if you need it.

 Potluck dinner Saturday evening.

Timberland Driving Trial Clinic

July 5,6 2008

Entry open-May 15         Entry close -June 15

This will be the first driving trial clinic at the farm of Else Bigton and Phillip Odden located 10 miles northwest of Cumberland, Wisconsin on county road H. Brian Jensen of British Columbia Canada will be the judge and clinician. We will offer only training level and it will include dressage and cones on Saturday. The marathon will be on Sunday. Brian will offer private lessons on Monday, at a charge of $25 for ½ hour.

Brian Jensen has offered this driving trial teaching format in the past with much success. The intent is to offer a safe and supportive learning situation for those who are interested in competing in Combined Driving Events. A driving trial is a non- sanctioned CDE. Brian will take time after the dressage test for each entry to explain the result of his judge’s form to the driver and groom. The cones course will follow the dressage test on Saturday. We will use ADS dressage test 3 which can be found on the ADS site or will be sent by email upon request.

Saturday afternoon we plan to drive the marathon course in pickup trucks with ample time to ask questions about the course and the rules that govern the marathon. There will be harness safety inspections before the dressage test on Saturday and before the marathon on Sunday. There will be rolling hills, some woods, and small stream crossings.

There will be space for people to camp on the grounds. People need to bring portable stalls or fencing and show out of their trailers. If you need it bring your own bedding, no bedding on hand. Camping fee $25 for the weekend.  Site cleanup deposit $20 to be a  Separate check made out to Odden’s Norwegian Fjord Horses.

If you bring a stallion it will need to be well behaved and show in the same space as all other horses. At this time we are sorry but we are not able to accommodate Very Small Equine for the driving trial clinic. Depending on the weather and rainfall there will be water crossings.

The event will be limited to 20 entries. Entry opens May 15. Entry closes June 15. Use standard ADS entry form.

Entry fee $125 Post entry fee $150       Rain or shine.  Negative Coggins required.

We need several volunteers to make it happen.

No lunch stand on grounds.
