Starting in 2009 Else and Phil will be offering riding and driving weekend sessions for people who would like to join us at our farm in Northwestern Wisconsin. Our Horses We maintain a herd of around twenty registered Norwegian Fjord horses. Over the years we have worked hard to purchase, breed and train calm, responsive and willing Fjords. The center piece of our herd is our stallion imported from Norway, Smedsmo Gråen. We have several mares that have scored 80 or over in the NFHR Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry evaluation system earning a Blue ribbon in conformation. All of the adult horses on our farm are trained to drive or ride. In most cases they both drive and ride. We usually have five or six horses that have extensive show experience. Our Experience Phil was born on a farm located 1 1/2 miles from the farm we now live on. Else was born in Ålesund, a town on the west coast of Norway in the heart of Fjord Horse country. As a child Phil learned to ride ponies on the farm. When we were able to acquire and care for horses as adults we naturally decided Norwegian Fjord Horses would be the best choice. For several years Phil has taken lessons in horsemanship riding and driving. He has studied Fjord conformation issues through the NFHR. He has made several trips in May to the annual stallion show at Nordfjordeid, Norway where he has studied with Norwegian Fjord Horse judges. Phil has competed successfully at Fjord breed shows, pleasure driving shows, and combined driving events in North America. Our interests Else is primarily interested in photographing the horses at home and at shows. Her photographs are popular among participants at the shows and are often published in articles and in popular calendars. Phil likes to drive his fjords hitched to carts, wagons and sleighs single and in pairs. He enjoys trail riding and using the horses as pack animals. Else and Phil use the horses to haul firewood and maple sap as well as light farm work around the farm. Our Facilities The farm consists of eighty acres with space to drive or ride on open fields and on wooded trails. We have quiet roads that lead to large tracts of State and County land within 1 1/2 miles of our farm. The Ice Age trail comes close to our farm. There are miles of public trails and logging roads close by that are closed to motorized vehicles. We also have a 160' x 72' indoor arena that is very pleasant to use if the weather is not nice outside. We Offer We offer a quiet and calm place to ride or drive your horses or ours. We have stables for your horses and plenty of space to ride and drive. Phil will help you learn to use horses safely in a supportive way. Together we can work on aspects of trail riding, driving singles or pairs, sleighing or packing. Phil can give you pointers on showing horses at pleasure driving events or combined driving events. We also offer classes in wood carving and other traditional Norwegian Folk Arts. Lodging People are welcomed to camp with their trailers on our farm. There are several motels and Bed and Breakfast places within easy driving distance of our farm. We will be happy to assist you with finding a place to stay.
