Very Important Facts about Smedsmo

Smedsmo Gråen was born in 1996 on the Smedsmo farm in Norway and is certainly one of the finest and most unusual stallions imported to North America from Norway. Gråen was sired by the gray stallion Lisjegraen who now lives in Belgium while his grandsire Briggen lives in Holland. Smedsmo Gråen’s dam was Jossefine and the dam sire was the popular stallion Sylvstein sired by the great Myrstein. He stands fourteen two hands high and his cannon bone measures 8 ½ inches.

Smedsmo Gråen was evaluated in Norway as a three year old and later as a five year old in the station testing program. As a three year old, he was placed number two of all the stallions of his year class and received his license to breed mares in Norway.

As a five year old, Smedsmo completed the extensive six week station test for stallions with impressive scores. He earned solid 10 points for behavior in stall, 10 for trail riding, 10 in draft and 10 for disposition. In a breed where disposition is very important this stallion has been judged to have first class disposition.

Smedsmo Gråen is an up-headed gray stallion with especially impressive movement. This stallion has three walks and three trots as well as a nice up hill canter. Judges have commented favorable about the quality of his gates with regard to impulsion, reach, action, and cadence.

Smedsmo Gråen has been shown extensively in the past four years. He has been judged Grand Champion Stallion twice and reserve champion stallion once at the largest fjord breed show in North America at Blue Earth. He has won several driving classes in open ADS driving shows as well as at the Blue Earth show. Smedsmo is especially handy at Gamblers Choice since there isn’t much that scares this bold stallion.

Smedsmo Gråen has 43 registered offspring in Norway and currently 39 registered offspring in America. He has sired offspring of each recognized color in the fjord world. This includes white, brown, red, gray and two yellow foals. Smedsmo passes along his wonderful disposition and trainability. Often his offspring are endowed with much better than average movement, a longer neck, well- formed and substancial hind quarters for impulsion, and the up-headed stance where the neck comes out high on the shoulders. This allows the front end of the horse to come up and the hind- quarters to reach under. Smedsmo has well formed withers that hold the saddle well.

Smedsmo has a wonderful large kind eye and a full forelock. Notice his full tail and dark points. Phillip Odden and Else Bigton are proud to present their stallion Smedsmo Gråen the wonderful fjord community.
