Horses for sale:

Plan for success.

There are some important things to think about when acquiring a new horse for both the buyer and seller. Planning for success means matching  the right horse with the right person. Most of our horses have dispositions that are well suited for people with less horse experience or people with plenty of experience. Other horses are better off with people who want and can handle a horse with lots of will to go forward. I would rather have a horse that feels relaxed  and calm in nearly any situation but if I need more energy I can rev up the engine if I need it. Over the years I have selected mares and a stallion with very good dispositions, top athletic ability and sound Fjord horse conformation.

Most of our horses are trained to both ride and drive. A few are not suited to drive in my opinion and should only be ridden.

In the end I have found that if I am consistent in my training my horses will be consistent. If I am confident my horses are confident. If I am soft my horses will be soft and if I am calm my horses will be calm. If I am a bold leader my horses will be bold.  Since I enjoy a good honest hard days work, my horses do too.

Over the past four or five years I have been concentrating my efforts on performance with driving at ADS sponsored Combined Driving Events and Pleasure Driving show being the focus. Driven dressage and the dressage training process form the basis of my training program for CDE and Pleasure driving. I have been very successful with Herger, Marcy and Gunvor being my primary driving horses.  Now I am training younger horses that we have bred and raised here on our farm and sired by our stallion. It is my desire to train and compete my own home bred ponies now so I am offering some very well trained and experienced Fjords for sale. These horses have extensive show records in driving single and in pairs. All my horses drive single and I also ride all my horses. So don't think that just because I am known as a pairs driver that my horses are not comfortable driving single.

Please call and talk to me about any of the horses listed here.

Highland Prairie Gunvor SHM-M-1957-M

Gunnie is a brown dun mare born in 1999. She stands 14hands high. She has had two foals on our farm by our stallion Smedsmo Gråen. I trained her to drive and ride. She drives single  in pairs and in four up. Gunnie is a very calm horse with good energy. This mare was evaluated under the NFHR system in 2005 with a score of 80 in conformation. Gunvor has some notable Norwegian Stallions in her background that include Myrstein and his son Konggard. Both stallions are known for their spectacular movement.

She has extensive experience at pleasure driving shows with very impressive results. Phil drove her to a third place finish in the Large Pony Open division at the Columbus Carriage Classic in 2009. In 2011 Allyssa Tisdell drove her for 4 first places, 1 second and a fifth for an overall championship in the Novice Driver Pony division at the Villa Louis Carriage Classic.  At the NFHR 25th Anniversary Show Gunnie won the Novice Working Pleasure class. She has been a demonstration horse at Midwest Fjord Horse Club events and she has participated  in several clinics.

Gunnie has done a good deal of trail riding but takes a rider of around 150 pounds or less since she is quite refined. She is very light in the bridle and can carry herself well in driving frame. This mare is very calm but has plenty of speed in a cones course. Her gaits are very rhythmical and she has a very big walk and a very big trot. Her canter is balanced.

She has very good ground manners. She can stand tied for long periods of time, is good with her feet, clips easy, and loads in a trailer easy. She is sound and has never been sick while with me. To my knowledge she has never had a bad experience while driving. She does not like needles when it is time for vaccinations but we always get through it. This horse would be fine with children if she is supervised. She is used to respectful handling with reins, so she is soft in the mouth and she understands inside outside rein. This mare is a good prospect for ridden or driven dressage. Gunnie is a very nice, calm and talented Fjord Mare.

Price: $12,000

  Ke Ja Co's Herger C-2054  KEF-K-2152-G

Herger is a brown dun gelding born in 1997. He stands 14.2 HH and is of medium Fjord build. Herger has extensive experience in driving and riding around the farm on the trail and at shows. Herger drives single and in multiples. He has won lots of ribbons at driving shows as a single and in pairs and in a four horse hitch. Together with Silver Willow Marcy in a pair he has won several ADS pleasure driving championships. He has won pleasure driving championships as a single driving horse driven by me and being driven by others. In ADS Combined Driving Events he has won several Dressage ribbons and overall division championships first at training level then at Preliminary Level. He has competed successfully at Intermediate Level in pairs.

In 2010 Marcy and Herger were invited to demonstrate in the ADS Driving Derby at the World Equestrian Games at Lexington, Kentucky.

Herger has done parades as well as farm chores like hauling in fire wood,  maple sap and working the garden plot.

Herger has extensive trail experience on trails in Wisconsin, South Carolina, Montana, British Columbia, and Colorado. He has packed elk and gear in the mountains of Colorado and carried novice riders in some very difficult mountainous terrain in remote wilderness areas. All this with never a problem.

Herger is always willing and has helped to train many young horses in driving pairs. He has always been sound and he has never been sick for me. There are few Fjord horses that have as much diverse experiences and are as well trained as this horse.

Price to the right home. $14,000.

Odden’s Karl 10-6554-G

Brown Dun Gelding Born June 2010

Karl is a healthy young gelding sired by the stallion WH Stone. Stone has an evaluation score of 81.5 and was the top stallion at the NFHR 25th anniversary show. His mother Høg Tussa was imported from Norway and has a conformation score of 85 that makes her one of the highest scored Fjord mares in North America. So this is a well- bred Fjord gelding.

Karl has good ground manners. He can be lead and he ties.

I expect he will grow to be 14.1 hands high or so with a medium build. He seems to have a very nice overstep at the walk and trot. Every indication is that he will make a good riding and driving horse.

 Price: $1800

                                                                                                     Odden’s Johannes 09-6542-G

Brown Dun Gelding Born 5/29/09

Johannes is sired by our stallion Smedsmo Gråen and out of our mare Berta. Our mare Berta has been scored at 81for conformation with the NFHR.

Johannes is of medium build and seems to be a quiet easy horse to handle. He leads nicely and he ties for long periods of time standing quietly. He is good with his feet. This is a calm gelding from a proven mare and one of the finest stallions standing at stud in North America. This gelding has a large overstep at the walk and trot. Conformation and movement like this is what makes a good driving and riding horse. I expect him to mature at about 14  + hands high.

This winter Johannes will learn to drive pulling light weight. By spring he should be pretty well started. Johannes is a good people horse with lots to offer.

 Price: $2400

                                                                                               Odden’s Kristi 10-6549-M

Grey Dun filly born May 7, 2010

Kristi was sired by our Grey stallion Smedsmo Gråen. Her mother is Norway View Aina and Aina has an evaluation score for conformation of 78.75. We have two of the gray fillies left from the very successful combination of Aina and Smedsmo Gråen. Her sisters have become very nice calm horses able to drive and ride quite well. I expect Kristi will be much the same. Grey Fjords are often thought to have even better work ethic that other colors of Fjord horses.  This filly leads well and is able to be tied. She is well socialized living in a small herd. This filly is a good driving and riding prospect. She is healthy and calm.

 Price : $2800

                                                                                           Lena IV SHE – Q-2333-M

Brown dun mare born 6/15/03

Lena is a drafty style mare. She has a small white star under her forelock. Lena stands about 14.1 and is sturdy and stout but not over weight. When I got her in the fall of 2010 she was not fit and she was a bit pushy with her ground manners it is fair to say. Last winter and off and on during the summer of 2011 I drove her often and rode her on trails and around the farm. My understanding is that she was a good driving horse with her past owner being driven on gravel roads with traffic.

I worked to get her back in good physical shape and I have instilled good ground manners in her. She now is a very nice willing horse. She rides and drives and she is respectful and willing.  This mare has had lots of experience and has a lot to offer. She can take a heavy rider and she will never quit when it comes to pulling a cart or riding. She stands about 14. 2. Lena likes people and is affectionate.

 Price: $4200

Odden’s Berta GBG-O-1995-M

Brown Dun mare born in 2001

Berta was born on our farm and sired by a Gjest son Polestar. Berta achieved a score of 81 through the NFHR evaluation program. This mare has nice proportions, a nice head and big kind eye. She moves very well and has good energy. Berta rides nicely and she has been driven a lot as a single and in pairs. She has been in traffic and on many trails. Berta has nice gaits and is fun to ride on trails since she is not scared and doesn’t tend to look at stuff along the trail. Berta has a big energetic walk and is fun to ride.  She stands about 14 hands. This mare will stand quietly to mount or to hitch.

She has been shown at the Midwest Fjord Horse show at Blue Earth taking first place in halter class as a 3 year old and doing well in driving classes.

Berta has had a couple foals and has been easy to breed and a good mother. Berta’s ground manners are good and she is sound and fit. This mare has had a lot of experience and would make a good mount and good companion horse. She is very human oriented with lots of good training.

Price: $8000

                                     Silver Willw Marcy  C-P-2646-M

                                                                                                               Brown Dun mare 14.1 HH

Five Blue Ribbon Mares

For a number of years we have worked at buying and breeding fjords with outstanding dispositions, lots of athletic ability and sound bodies. I like fjords with nice heads and a nice large kind eye. Our fjords tend to be of medium to lighter build though I do have some tall large bodied mares as well. Currently we have Five mares that have scored 80 or over in the NFHR conformation test qualifying for a Blue Ribbon. Hog Tussa at 85, Silver Willow Marcy at 82, Odden woods Eirose at 81, Odden's Berta at 81, Highland Prairie Gunvor at 8o.

 Training

All of our horses are handled frequently and have solid ground manners. We work hard to expose them to all kinds of noises, shapes and forms and other distractions that tend to worry horses. With the selection of breeding stock with sound minds and great dispositions coupled with basic and advanced training, we think we have some of the finest fjords in the country. Our performance record speaks for itself. The horses we take to town are typically well behaved and well trained.

     Phone:  715 468 2780

We have other horses that we might sell to the right home. Please inquire if you are looking for something special. Our stallion has been highly evaluated in Norway for conformation and performance. He has been the Champion fjord stallion at the largest fjord show in America, Blue Earth, twice and reserve champion once. We pride ourselves in having well behaved and trained stock with outstanding conformation, and exciting movement.
